Frightening experience with Sony Ericsson update tool
I recently bought a Sony Ericsson K610i mobile phone as a replacement for my old K700i (yes, k700i is older than k610i).
Although I really like my new phone, it had some issues, for instance, the T9 input was flawed as it didn’t really update after my first text message – that is, the first variant of a spelling used will always be the first one it suggests. Also when typing in text fields online, it would capitalize everything. I know CAPSLOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR AWESOME! But it was really annoying anyway. So I have regularly checked for firmware updates inside the phone, which is a really nice feature anyway, and today it reported to me that it had a new update, so I tried to download it, which of course failed. So I downloaded the Sony Ericsson update tool, which is an evil and bloated java program. It took a few tries to get right, especially because the Danish translation was somewhat ambiguous:
- Make sure your battery is full – ehm, I recharged it tonight, is that good enough?
- Turn off your phone – check!
- Replace your battery – what? You assume I have a spare battery lying around? Must be: Remove your battery.
- Take out the SIM card -Proved to be a bit difficult actually, had to use a pair of tweezers for that.
- Put the battery back on – You mean the replaced one?
- Hold down the C key – for how long? Nothing happened there
- Insert the USB cable – ah! You mean while holding down the C key!
After I few tries the update program started, and I was horrified: A big flashing text appeared telling me “Do not tough your phone” and I didn’t! I swear to you!
In the end it all came out as I had hoped for and it seems the few errors I was annoyed about has gone.
A little recommendation for all you gadget-geeks, if you’re using a 3G telephone, get Opera Mini. It’s a great browser for your phone. It enables you to access almost any webpage, and is surely much better than the built-in one. Also check out MidpSSH – a secure shell client for your mobile phone. I can’t tell how many times it has saved me and my servers.
